He is a specialist in the study of Indian Buddhist monastic law (<em>Vinaya<\/em>), working primarily on legal texts\u2014both canonical and commentarial\u2014preserved in Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese. His work aims to recover, among other things, lost voices and views from premodern sources, including those related to pregnant nuns and monastic mothers: Buddhist monasticism, but not as we generally imagine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research related to commentary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I am currently working on an edition of a Buddhist <em>Vinaya<\/em> commentary preserved in Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese: Vi\u015b\u0101kha(deva)\u2019s <em>Bhik\u1e63u-vinayak\u0101rik\u0101-kusuma-sraj<\/em>. I am also directing a SSHRC-sponsored project to examine Buddhist monastic law codes preserved in Tibetan Dunhuang manuscript collections.
