Fredette studied classical philology at Fresno Pacific University before pursuing an M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto\u2019s Centre for Medieval Studies.\u00a0His work centred on the editing of medieval Latin commentaries on classical poets and the influence which these texts exerted on medieval Latin, French, and Occitan literature. His dissertation, \u201cThe Medieval\u00a0<em>Thebaid<\/em>,\u201d applied these general concerns to the specific context of Statius\u2019 epic poem on the theme of the Seven Against Thebes, revealing the crucial role played by medieval methods of reading and teaching the\u00a0<em>Thebaid\u00a0<\/em>on \u2013\u00a0among other genres \u2013 the birth of the Old French romance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research related to commentary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Fredette is currently involved in two projects \u2013 one individual and one collaborative \u2013 editing twelfth-century commentaries on Vergil and Statius. He has also completed a study of William of Conches\u2019 commentary on Boethius\u2019\u00a0<em>Consolation of Philosophy<\/em>, revealing its presence in an Anglo-Norman romance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Toronto Anthony J.
